Bus stop safety reminders as district prepares for return to in-person instruction

JANUARY 31, 2026

Dear Wolverine families:

We hope that you have been able to stay warm and safely weather the snow and cold over the past week. The Woodland Hills School District truly appreciates the grace and flexibility that our students, staff, and families have demonstrated during this period as we made the shift to remote learning.

It is our sincere hope that we will be able to welcome back our students and staff for in-person instruction on Monday, February 2. The district will continue to monitor the forecast over the weekend and will share any changes to that plan as quickly as possible.

As we prepare for the return to in-person instruction next week, we wanted to take this opportunity to share a few reminders about student safety at our designated bus stops throughout the district. As many of you are aware, some sidewalks in the district remain snow-covered, some roads are narrower because of snowbanks on either side, and some intersections now have substantial piles of snow obstructing the field of view of drivers and pedestrians.

Because of these conditions, we ask that you please have a conversation with your children about proper behavior while they are waiting for the bus at their stops. Please highlight the following safety tips in your conversations:

  • Stay out of the street. We understand snow drifts or snow-covered sidewalks may make it challenging, but it’s safer than standing on the roadway.
  • Be mindful of the snow and ice. Don’t run to your stop and don’t run to the bus. Walk steadily and watch each step. Roads and sidewalks that appear to be clear can still have unseen icy spots.
  • Be alert. With high snow drifts or mounds of plowed snow, cars may not be able to see you until it’s too late. Be extra cautious about crossing streets and be sure to do so at designated intersections.
  • Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop. Buses may need additional room or to load/unload at a slightly different location. Wait until they stop and open the door before boarding or departing. Don’t walk behind the bus.
  • Be patient and prepared. Parents and guardians should continue to monitor the MyRide K12 app to check the timing for their designated bus. Some buses may be slightly delayed due to road conditions or longer stops.
  • Stay warm. Bundle up with appropriate jackets, boots, hats, and gloves, as well as clothing underneath outerwear. If any child or family needs assistance with winter weather clothing, please reach out to your building principal, counselor, and/or social worker. We are here to help and have resources available for families in need.

When possible, it would be helpful for parents and guardians to wait with our students at bus stops to provide additional layers of safety. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate the disruptions caused by the winter weather. We are very hopeful that we’ll be able to welcome our students and staff back into our buildings Monday morning and to resume in-person instruction.

Thank you,

WHSD Administration
